Dabeli is a famous street food in Gujarat. It is spicy and tangy potato filling inside the bun. Dabeli is nothing but the other version of Vada Pav. We are fond of both Vada Pav and Dabeli so we make it very often. It is a great food for Picnic.
For Dabeli Masala Powder
1 Red Chilli
½ Teaspoon Hing
1 small stick Cinnamon
1 Teaspoon Coriander Seeds
¼ Teaspoon Cumin
For Potato Filling
4 Potatoes, boiled and mashed
Dabeli masala (above mentioned)
Salt, to taste
4 Pav Buns
1 Onion finely chopped
¼ cup Garlic Chutney
¼ cup Coriander Chutney (Optional)
½ cup Sev
½ cup Roasted Peanuts
¼ cup Pomegranate
2 spring Coriander Leaves, chopped
Butter (To toast the buns)
Heat a pan, roast all the ingredients given below Dabeli masala powder for few minutes.
Once cooled, grind it to a fine powder and use as required.
Heat oil in a pan, add dabeli masala powder in the oil and fry for few seconds on medium heat.
Add boiled and mashed potatoes along with the dabeli masala powder and mix well. Keep aside.
Slice the pav into half horizontally. Spread the butter and toast them on the pan on both the sides till slightly golden brown.
Spread a spoonful of coriander chutney (optional) on the lower half of the bun.
Then place the potato filling above the coriander chutney spread.
Top with chopped onion, peanuts, pomegranate, garlic chutney, sev and coriander leaves.
Now place the other half of the bun on the top.
Tips and Variations:
We like to have coriander chutney in our Dabeli but it is optional.
You can even spread Tamarind Chutney instead of Coriander Chutney.
Pomegranate adds extra taste to the dish so try not to skip them.
