Puffed Rice is known as Pori in Tamil. It is used in different ways. We can make spicy puffed rice for a snack, puffed rice upma, bhel Pori and so on. Spicy Pori, Popcorn, spicy lotus seeds are our favourite snacks and they are healthy too. Kara Pori is one of the famous snacks in my hometown Coimbatore. We make this very often and you can find kara pori in most of the house. We keep munching this during teatime. It is a simple yet tasty snack. We get salty puffed rice in India but what we get here is without salt, so we have to add a generous amount of salt while preparing this recipe. You don’t have to make this every day. This stays fresh in an air-tight container for 8 to 10 days so we make in bulk and store it for everyday use.

Tips to make perfect Spicy Puffed Rice:

1. Do not add green chillies instead of red chillies.

2. You can use chilli powder instead of red chillies.

3. Add more curry leaves and peanuts.

4. Adjust salt according to your puffed rice.

5. Add the garlic along with the skin.

6. You can store this puffed rice for a few days in an air-tight container.

Here is the step by step process for Spicy Puffed Rice:

Take a pan, add oil and add 1 tsp mustard seeds. Allow mustard seeds to crackle.

Then add 2 red chillies, 3 sprigs of curry leaves and saute well.

Now add ¼ cup of peanuts and saute for 2 to 3 minutes.

Add 5 garlic cloves and cook till the garlic cooks well.

Then add ¼ tsp hing and give it a mix.

Now add 2 tbsp roasted gram dal, ½ tsp turmeric,

salt and mix everything well.

Once the masala is ready, add 3 cups puffed rice and mix well.

Serve with tea or coffee for snack time.

Ingredients

  • Puffed Rice - 3 cups
  • Garlic - 4 to 5 cloves (pounded with skin)
  • Mustard Seeds - 1 tsp
  • Peanut - 1/4 cup
  • Roasted Gram Dal - 2 tbsp
  • Curry Leaves - 3 sprigs
  • Red Chillies - 2 numbers
  • Hing - 1/4 tsp
  • Turmeric - 1/2 tsp
  • Salt - To taste
  • Oil - 3 to 4 tbsp
